The incident occurred on Saturday around 5pm just off the A63 Selby Road, close to railway bridge and the junction with the A64 York Road.
At the time the 5-year-old was walking on the pavement with his mum when the unknown small blue car came out from an unmade road at the side of a takeaway and struck the child.
The vehicle then made off turning left and going under the railway bridge.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident or anyone with information about the car or it's occupants to come forward.
Fortunately the child was not seriously injured but did receive treatment for a slight injury to his arm.
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Rayner at the Eastern Area Roads Policing Unit based at Killingbeck Police Station via: 101. Alternatively information can be left, anonymously and in confidence, through Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.

Child Injured Following Hit And Run Collision
