Couples Forget Last Year's Xmas Gift

A total of 3 in 4 men can’t remember what gift they received from their partner last Christmas, a new survey has revealed.

A total of 79% of men drew a blank when asked to think back less than a year. Women fared slightly better, but 68% still struggled to recall the gift they received from their other half.

Experience day company Best Experiences asked over 1200 people to remember the Christmas presents they received for Christmas 2011. And it seems the money and effort that goes into choosing that special gift is usually forgotten as soon as the winter is over.

In contrast, 90% hoped their partner would remember the gift they received this Christmas, but this research shows this is clearly not going to happen.

John Pattison, experience expert at the form commissioned the survey after years of forgotten gifts said: "Obviously we all want to get a wonderful gift that our partner will cherish, but it’s not working. We want people to stop being so boring - to buy more unusual and memorable gifts that won’t end up lying forgotten in a drawer or cupboard."

So what gifts will people remember?

Unsurprisingly, the survey showed that we generally remember lavish, once in a lifetime gifts –people who received a trip to New York, an engagement ring and a new car all remembered their generous gift.

But luckily it’s not all about money - other types of gifts people remembered included family heirlooms, tickets to gigs and unusual activities. However others were memorable for entirely the wrong reasons - such as the lucky lady who received a cut-price course of colonic irrigation!

John Pattison continued: "In a way, I don’t mind receiving terrible gifts, because at least I’ll remember it and can have a laugh about it later."

Top tips for choosing a gift that will be remembered next year

1 – Spend LOADS, eg a new car or a romantic holiday

2 – Give activities or tickets - experience gifts are far more memorable than items

3 – Think creatively about the things they like – eg a day feeding lions for a cat lover

4 – Choose something really unusual that they’d never expect - eg driving a monster truck

5 – If all else fails, buy something terrible - they’ll definitely remember that!
