Marcus du Sautoy, Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University and President of the Mathematical Association told the BBC that people are drawn to these dates because they see a pattern.
He commented:"Although it looks trivial people being drawn to this date, actually it's a very powerful way of looking at the world.
"I think it's less trivial than it looks.
"We are all incredibly lucky to be living in this 12-year period because it's pretty fallow after that."
