A World War II bride who dressed in parachute silk, a 1960s suit-wearing-siren and a garage owner walking eight of his children down the aisle are just a handful of memories being brought back to life at a special wedding-themed heritage weekend.
'Married at All Saints' on the 10th and 11th September will see the 1,000 year-old restored church in Vange, opened to the public.
On display at the village church in Essex will be photographs of couples who wed at the place of worship throughout the decades as well as wedding dresses worn by some of the brides.
According to event organisers the Friends of All Saints Church the first recorded wedding ceremony took place in 1551 while the last one was performed in 1991.
Love is in the air
Jan Watt, Treasurer of the 'Friends' group, (pictured above during her wedding ceremony with Ritchie Watt) has put her mother's simple 1945 wedding dress on display.
"It is made from parachute silk, as that was the only material available just after the end of World War II," she said.
"I will also be displaying my parents wedding photograph taken just outside All Saints Church in August 1945.
"My mothers wedding dress hung in her wardrobe for 64 years, before she passed away last year. I have a photograph of my mother in her wedding dress on her 55th wedding anniversary in August 2000 - she could still get into her dress.
"The other wedding dress to be displayed will be my own, worn in 1978, along with a photograph of my husband and I taken inside the church."
Mrs Watt has received photographs from nearly 40 different couples who married at the church.
Not All Brides Married In White
"There is a photo of a typical 1940s style 'suit' and a hat worn on the 'tilt' plus a 1960s style suit and hat worn by one young bride," Jan said.
The exhibition will also feature a family tree style display of the Thomas clan's pictures. Mr Thomas owned a garage in Vange for many years and was well known in the area. The family had 10 children, one of whom didn't marry but eight were married in All Saints Church.
Rebecca Rees, the Churches Conservation Trust's South East Director, welcomed the event: "To help keep these churches preserved for the future they must be used by people. The Wedding Themed Heritage Day brings in visitors to these beautiful historic buildings to enjoy the event and discover the church, and help raise funds for their on-going care."
Basildon Heritage will be displaying photographs of 'Old Vange' as it was in bygone days.
Entry to the event is free, doors open from 10:30am to 2:30pm on both days.
The church will be decorated with flowers and ribbons as it has been for many wedding ceremonies.
