Vicar Defies Increased Wedding Costs

A Vicar is refusing to pass on increased wedding and funeral costs to parishioners.

Fr Richard Tillbrook, of St Barnabas Church, Colchester, is "applauded" by the Church of England increases and will defy them while the economic downturn continues.

"We work very hard to encourage people to go to church and to get married in church and I worry this will turn people away, " he told the Metro. "I have not seen anything happen or any reason to justify the increase. In this economic climate in poor parishes this is a huge increase which is not acceptable."

The General Synod agreed to price hikes which will see weddings costing £400 up from £262 and funerals costing £160 instead of the current £105 price tag.

New vicars are bound by the rates but longer-serving vicars like Fr Richard can choose their own rates.
