Holmes filed for divorce just five days before Cruise's 50th birthday.
In an interview with German television network, ProSieben, the actor has finally spoken about the breakdown of his marriage to 34-year-old Holmes.
"I didn't expect it," he admitted, before adding he "had an unbelievable amount of time to think about it."
He added that "life is a challenge", and claimed turning 50 also made him stop and think.
"To be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have a grip on everything, and then it hits you -- this is it, what life can do to you. Life is a tragicomedy. You need to have a sense of humor."
Just last month, director Adam Shankman told US Weekly that both Cruise and Holmes were "doing well" following their split.
Holmes and Cruise began dating in early 2005, and were engaged by June of that year. They married in a Scientology ceremony in November 2006. After five years of marriage, Holmes filed for divorce in June 2012. The pair have a daughter together, five-year-old Suri.
