The boy's mother had gone into labour on the Isles of Scilly and gave birth part-way through the flight after Falmouth Coastguard received an emergency call on Tuesday.
It is understood the RNAS Culdrose crew attempted to get the expectant mother to hospital before her delivery, but soon had to inform the coastguard that their crew of seven had "just increased to eight". The child was delivered by a midwife who had flown out to St Mary's.
Both mother and baby were later taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital and both are said to be doing well.
According to the BBC, Lt Cdr Chuck Norris, the observer on board the helicopter, said the baby boy was born "somewhere over the River Fal" about 10 minutes before landing.
He added: "The midwife started to get a little bit excited and said we'd better start getting prepared for the birth.
"So, we got the equipment ready and we gave mum as much encouragement as we could."
