Karen and Ian Gilbert welcomed their baby daughters – Ffion, Maddison and Paige – into the world eight weeks ago, but were only allowed home two weeks ago.
The couple, who are also parents to a three-year-old daughter called Faye, said they were shocked when they discovered they were expecting triplets.
Mrs Gilbert is quoted by the BBC as saying: "We were just very shocked.
"The lady doing the scan had to call somebody else into the room to check what she was seeing was right.
"We pretty much left the hospital laughing, crying, laughing, crying... but we were over the moon."
The girls were conceived naturally, and the discovery about the multiple babies was made when Mrs Gilbert experienced pain just eight weeks into her pregnancy. The subsequent scan revealed there were three heartbeats.
The mum added that they had been given the choice to terminate the pregnancy or attempt to reduce the number of babies.
She explained: "The risks were so high to me and the babies because they shared a placenta.
"There was the chance of twin to twin syndrome, where one baby can starve the other two babies of food and other fluids.
"But we just couldn't do it. The babies are ours."
The girls were born safely on 2 August at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport and all weighed just over 3lb each.
The babies were kept in the neonatal unit for a week to continue to grow before being transferred to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, for a further five weeks.
