Sources close to the sporting couple have said the couple went their separate ways weeks ago.
Speaking to the Sunday Independent, a source is quoted as saying: "Yes they are over. It's a difficult time for them both but it is for the best in the long run."
Wozniacki, a world-class tennis player, is said to be "absolutely devastated" at the news.
The couple have been in the spotlight recently after it emerged they had hit a rough patch in their relationship, but it is thought the final straw was when Wozniacki, 23, posted an embarrassing photograph of McIlroy sleeping to social networking site Twitter.
A source explained: "Rory was very upset by it [the photo] and even Serena Williams pointed out – albeit in a joking way – it was a pretty mean thing to do."
The couple's relationship is said to have ended days after the picture was posted online.
Speaking about Wozniacki, the source added: "There were a lot of tears. She still has her profile picture on her social networking site set as the two of them in happier times, but I can tell you the pair are no longer an item.
"Rory has a lot of respect for Caroline and their time together was good, but he feels it's time to move on now. And he wishes her nothing but the best."
