One Glass Of Wine Can Cut Chances Of Pregnancy By A Third

Researchers have claimed that having just one or two glasses of wine a week could cut a woman's chances of falling pregnant by a third.

The study was carried out by Dr Dara Godfrey of NY fertility clinic Reproductive Medicine Associates and presented to a meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in Boston, and looked at the findings from 91 women receiving IVF treatment.

The results also suggested that three or more glasses of wine a week could slash the chances of conception by two-thirds.

The findings are suggest the chances of success can be affected even if women stick to the limits recommended by the NHS. Health workers say women trying to start a family should have no more than three small glasses of wine a week, but it is preferable to have none at all.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr Godfrey said that women who were teetotal in the study had a 90% chance of becoming pregnant, but those who drank through the week reduced the odds by up to 70%. She added that binge drinking further exacerbated the problem.

She said: "My advice at the end of the day is to limit alcohol to very low amounts or to abstain completely."
