Katy Perry has said her break-up and subsequent divorce from Russell Brand felt like being "punched in the face and kicked down the stairs".
She added that she took a "good knock" following the couple's separation, and was in bed "for about two weeks".
She added: "I'm not the kind of person who is always like 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger'.
"I was in bed for about two weeks. I was pretty f***ed, yes. It hurt a lot – I got a good knock.
"What I wanted to call this record at first was 'Adult Reality' because 'Teenage Dream' was so high on that cotton candy cloud, and then it's like I got punched in the face and kicked down the stairs a couple of times. So I had to face the reality that things are not always on cloud nine.
"Unfortunately, although I had the outward self-identity I didn't have the inner kind, I hadn't built that up.
"My self-worth was in someone else's hands which is never a good idea, because it can be taken from you at any time. And it was, and it was shattered."
Brand and Perry first met in the summer of 2009 when the singer filmed a cameo for Brand's film 'Get Him To The Greek'. They started dating after they met again in September 2009 at the MTV Video Music Awards. In December 2009 they announced their engagement and married in October 2010 in a traditional Hindu ceremony, near the Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary in India, the same location where Brand proposed.
After 14 months of marriage, Brand filed for divorce in December 2011, citing irreconcilable differences. Their divorce was finalised in July 2012.
