The couple first announced they were to go their separate ways in 2011, but no formal moves to legalise the separation were made. However, according to the New York Post, the couple are now thought to have signed the necessary paperwork, with legal documents being filed as early as next week.
A source is claimed to have told the paper's Page Six, that: "Ashton and Demi have finally signed their divorce agreement.
"They are about to file paperwork with the court that will formally end their marriage."
Ever since the couple's separation, there has been rumours as to what has been slowing down the divorce proceedings, with many reports suggesting it was due to money issues.
Moore, 50, who has a fortune of around $150m, was thought to be demanding spousal support from her 35-year-old estranged husband, who is television's highest paid actor due to his role in sitcom Two And A Half Men.
An insider explained: "There had been lengthy negotiations between lawyers for both sides about the financial settlement - in particular, how much he owed her from their marriage.
"They have finally come to an agreement that was acceptable to all sides."
