Katy Perry and John Mayer exchanged love letters before they started dating.
The singer made the revelation to Entertainment Weekly magazine.
She explained how she and 36-year-old Mayer "had a long courtship" before they first made their relationship public in June 2012. The 29-year-old added that their relationship inspired her new track, 'Legendary Lovers'.
"I actually wrote it in an email one time, and after I wrote it I looked – we had a long courtship before anything was [public], just writing letters to each other – and seeing 'legendary lovers', it sounded so nice," she said.
"Some things float into my mind, and I process them, and [then] I make songs about them."
Perry was previously married to British comedian Russell Brand for 14 months. They first met in the summer of 2009 and started dating after meeting again in September 2009 at the MTV Video Music Awards. They announced their engagement in December 2009 and married in October 2010 in a traditional Hindu ceremony, near the Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary in India, the same location where Brand proposed. After 14 months of marriage, Brand filed for divorce in December 2011, citing irreconcilable differences. Their divorce was finalised in July 2012.
