The study, called HUNT3, was carried out by a team from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and they said they were "surprised" at the results.
More than 48,000 people took part in one of the largest health studies ever performed in Norway. The team behind the project asked participants nine questions about how well people think they remember. Those involved were asked how often they had problems remembering things, if they had problems remembering names and dates, if they could remember what they did one year ago and if they could remember details from conversations.
The male participants were reported to have the most problems for eight out of the nine questions. However, while women were said to have significantly better memories than men, they do struggle to remember names and dates. In addition, participants who were the most highly educated were found to forget the least.
Commenting on the findings, Professor Jostein Holmen, from NTNU, said: "It was surprising to see that men forget more than women. This has now been documented before.
"It was also surprising to see that men are just as forgetful whether they are 30 or 60 years old. The results were unambiguous.
"We have speculated a lot about why men report more frequent problems with remembering than women do, but have not been able to find an explanation. This is still an unsolved mystery."
Both men and women were found to have an increase in memory issues after the age of 60, and researchers are now trying to see if there is a link between forgetfulness in youth and dementia in old age.
