Plans to extend same-sex marriage legislation in Northern Ireland have been defeated at Stormont.
On Tuesday, politicians met to discuss the issue on whether a law should be introduced to allow gay couples the right to marry in the region.
The motion was put forward by Sinn Féin and received support from the SDLP and Alliance Party, while the UUP said it would allow its individual members to make their own decision on the controversial issue. The DUP, which has always voiced its opposition to same-sex marriage, tabled a petition of concern against the motion on Monday – the move meant that the proposal could only be passed if a majority of both unionists and nationalists supported it.
Following the debate yesterday, a vote was taken and defeated, with 43 supporting the issue and 50 voting no.
In March, the first gay marriages took place in the UK, while the first ceremonies are expected to take place in Scotland in October 2014. Northern Ireland is the only region in the UK with no similar laws, while a referendum on gay marriage is expected to be held in the Republic of Ireland next year.
