Sham Marriage Gang Jailed

Five people have been jailed for the role they played in a suspected sham marriage, it has been reported.

Fatou N'Diaye, 26, a French national, was due to marry Dominic Nartey, from Cameroon, in December 2013 at Newtownards Registry Office in Northern Ireland. However, just before the ceremony was due to go ahead, criminal investigation officers from the Home Office intervened.

N'Diaye, as well as French nationals Massiame Bamba and Ben Doumbia were charged with conspiracy to facilitate a breach of UK immigration law, as was Nartey and two other Cameroonians, Elvis Asaah and Joseph Vutung.

Nartey also faced an additional charge of possessing an identity document with improper intent.

It is understood a warrant has been issued for the arrest of a sixth member of the gang after it was revealed he has "gone missing".

At Downpatrick Crown Court earlier this week, it was said that all six individuals worked to establish a sham marriage between N'Diaye and Nartey. N'Diaye had confessed she knew the ceremony was bogus and that she had been paid to be a 'bride', after another sham bride pulled out of the deal just two days previously.

Nartey, whose visa was due to expire, initially denied the marriage was a sham, before saying it was and had been orchestrated by him. It was also revealed that the 'husband' and 'wife' had only met each other for the first time on the morning of their planned ceremony – and were unable to communicate as they did not speak the other's language.

According to the BBC, Nartey was jailed for two years and N'Diaye for six months.
