Number Of Abortions In NI Falls

The number of abortions carried out in Northern Ireland last year has fallen, according to latest figures.

On Wednesday, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) published the statistics relating to medical abortions and terminations that had been carried out in the region during 2013/14.

During 2013/14, 23 terminations were carried out in HSC hospitals in Northern Ireland, down from 28 in 2012/13. Officials added that due to the small numbers involved, relatively large fluctuations may be expected from year to year.

Of the 23 abortions carried out, just over 60% took place within the Belfast Trust, while all were carried out to women normally resident in Northern Ireland.

Eleven terminations of pregnancy were carried out on women aged 30 years and over, eight terminations of pregnancy carried out to women aged 25 to 29, and four to women aged 24 and under.

The number of terminations does not include procedures as a result of a miscarriage or when the foetus is already no longer viable, it has been said. In addition, the procedures documented in the report were carried out in line with Northern Ireland's strict legislation on abortion, where it is illegal to have a termination unless there is a serious risk to the life or mental wellbeing of the woman.
