The 54-year-old, who tends to be fiercely protective of his private life, confirmed his relationship with the actress in January 2014 and over the Christmas holidays, it was reported that the couple had become engaged, with Penn also planning to adopt Theron's three-year-old son Jackson.
Opening up to Esquire magazine about his relationship, the actor said: "I'm surprised to be in love. Lot of reasons. 53 years old plus finally beginning to figure out why you haven't been happy in a single relationship? It could seem too late.
"To run into somebody now who you care about is a much passionate, deeper, truer and a much happier feeling. It's a lot more romantic and a lot more fulfilling to be in a relationship and to think you're a good person within it."
So, when the actor was questioned about the subject of marriage, he was quick to answer: "Yes, I'd get married again."
If he does marry Theron, this will be his third marriage. He was previously married to Madonna from 1985 to 1989, and then actress Robin Wright from 1996 to 2000.
However, he also admitted during the interview that he doesn't count his former marriages as such. Telling the publication that he would think of a union with Theron as a "first marriage", he added: "You say I've been married twice before but I've been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today, so I wouldn't even consider a third marriage, I'd consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the tradition."
