Homemakers 'Work 56 Hours A Week'

A new study has found that homemakers work an average of 56 hours a week. When childcare duties are included, this is an additional six hours a day.

The research, commissioned by LV=, revealed that the average housewife or househusband's working week is 17 hours longer than their at-work partner, if travel time is excluded, as they tackle household chores and looking after their children.

Of the most time-consuming chores, cooking (1hour 47mins), cleaning (1hour 45mins) and laundry (1hour 30mins) took the top spots, while shopping for essentials (1hour 23mins), helping children with homework (1hour 8mins) and responsibilities such as paying bills, managing finances and home improvements (1hour 41mins) also added to the hours worked by a homemaker.

Most working partners were found to be appreciative of the work of the homemaker, but 33% of breadwinners said they believed the role their other plays is "easy". Interestingly, 30% of homemakers admitted they worried that their partner thinks they could "do a better job". 21% of homemakers said they felt undervalued by their partner.

However, the survey also discovered that many families would struggle to cope if it wasn't for the work and support of a stay-at-home partner. For example, 48% of respondents admitted they would be forced to rely on their family or friends for help, while 20% said they would have to pay for services such as a childminder or cleaner. One in 10 (8%) said they would not be able to rely on family or paid help, saying they simply "wouldn't be able to cope".
