RCM Members Take Part In TUC March

Royal College of Midwives members were out in force at the TUC march and rally in Manchester on Sunday, 04 October, to coincide with the first day of the Conservative Party Conference.

The RCM was there with thousands of others to support the TUC 'Protest the right to strike' campaign.

The TUC, union colleagues and the RCM are calling on the government to rethink their plans on the Trade Union Bill.

The RCM believes the bill fundamentally undermines midwives, MSWs and other workers' right to protest against unfair changes to pay, pensions and working conditions. It also affects unions’ ability to prevent job losses and cuts to services.

Among the bill's proposals are plans to use agency staff to replacing striking workers, and union regulation plans that threaten union members' privacy.

RCM director for policy, employment relations and communications, Jon Skewes, said: "I am delighted with the impact the march had and the RCM's contribution to it, including the attendance and participation by a number of our members.

"We had a very visible presence at the event, which has been widely reported in the media. The march and rally were supported by many RCM members, trade unionists and families.

"It was a pity that the actions of a tiny anti-democratic minority towards journalists and delegates helped divert pressure on the government on their illiberal plans."
