Europe's First Zika Microcephaly Birth Recorded

The first Zika microcephaly birth has been recorded in Europe.

According to reports, a woman in Spain, who was infected with the virus, gave birth to a baby with microcephaly. In May, authorities had detected microcephaly in the foetus, but the parents decided to keep the baby.

The neonatal chief at Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron hospital, Felix Castillo, is quoted by the BBC as saying the baby's vital signs were "normal and stable".

The child was born by caesarean section after 40 weeks of pregnancy. He is being constantly monitored.

It is thought to be the first such case in Europe.

Zika virus is spread by the Aedes mosquito and has rapidly spread through the Americas in recent months. It has been linked to babies being born with underdeveloped brains. In January, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the microcephaly condition, which sees children born with abnormally small brains, a global public health emergency.
