Raw Eggs 'Safe For Pregnant Women'

A new report has said that raw or lightly cooked eggs are 'safe' for pregnant women.

The Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food said that the risk of salmonella from UK eggs produced to Lion code, or equivalent standards, should be considered to be "very low".

This means that eggs could be served raw or lightly cooked to 'vulnerable' groups, such as the young, the elderly and expectant mothers.

In its recommendation, the report said there has been a "major reduction in the microbiological risk from salmonella in UK hen shell eggs" since its 2001 findings. However, it added that its decision to classify certain eggs as "very low" risk only applies to UK hens' eggs produced under Lion code or equivalent standards. The report also said that safety guidance, such as proper storage and eating eggs within best before dates, must be followed.

In response to the findings, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has started an eight-week consultation.
