According to reports, people near Folkestone, Kent, have been sent letters informing them that Asian tiger mosquito eggs have been discovered nearby.
However, Public Health England has said there is no further evidence of the insect being detected, and there is currently no risk to public health.
Jolyon Medlock, Head of Medical Entomology at Public Health England (PHE), is quoted as saying: "We regularly monitor mosquito species and look for any which are new to the UK.
"Enhanced monitoring of the area was implemented and no further evidence of this mosquito has so far been found.
"As a precaution we advised the local authority to use insecticide as a means of control."
Spraying of insecticide has been completed at the site in question.
Since the Zika epidemic began in 2015, almost 5,000 cases of microcephaly have been recorded in affected regions. In February 2016, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the epidemic an international public health emergency.
