It is understood the number of men and women divorcing reached 106,959 in 2016 – an increase of 5.8% on the previous year – or from 8.5 to 8.9 per 1,000 married people.
The official figures found that the most common duration of a marriage was 12 years, rising slightly from 11.9 in 2015 and 11.4 in 2009.
Men were, on average, an age of 46.1 when they ended an opposite-sex marriage, while women were 43.7, reflecting the fact that men tend to tie the knot with women who are younger.
The average divorce age has increased year-on-year since 1985, when it was typically in the mid-30s.
Some 9,848 men aged over 60 divorced last year, up from 8,697. Divorces among over-60 women rose from 6,128 to 5,554.
Elsewhere, 61% of unions were ended at the woman's request, with 'unreasonable behaviour' the most common ground cited.
Meanwhile, there were 112 divorces of same-sex couples in 2016, with 78% of those female couples.
Nicola Haines, spokeswoman at the ONS, said: "Although the number of divorces of opposite-sex couples in England and Wales increased by 5.8 per cent in 2016 compared with 2015, the number remains 30 per cent lower than the most recent peak in 2003; divorce rates for men and women have seen similar changes."
