Weddings Lavish Despite Recession

Even in times of economic recession brides-to-be are willing to stretch their budgets in order to put on a lavish wedding ceremony.

A survey by WeddingsDay revealed the average wedding cost here in the UK falls anywhere between a huge £15,000 and a staggering £25,000, with the cumulative average figure settling around the £18,500 mark.

Fees for everything from marquee hire to wedding cakes and photographers have risen steeply, according to the leading insurance firm Weddingplan.

Brides and grooms are apparently not being put off by the rising cost of getting married or the recession, with bridal gown firms and popular venues reporting increased orders and bookings in the past few months.

But according to Philippa Gee, an independent financial adviser, it's worth remembering that a marriage certificate costs only £3.50; a ceremony, at a church, is around £300 and about £100 at a register office. Anything after that is up to you – and it's perfectly possible to bring the whole thing in at less than a grand.

She said: "Money is one of the biggest causes of relationship breakdown. So forget a dream wedding and go for a dream marriage, instead."
