The law change to be put forward in February would allow full wedding ceremonies for gay couples although Danish clergy would still hold the right to refuse weddings without sanctions.

Pink News reports Church Minister Manu Sareen telling the Danish press: "The first same-sex weddings will hopefully become reality in spring 2012."

In 1989 Denmark became was the first country in the world to allow registered same-sex unions.
