The 007 star, 43, who married Rachel Weiz, 41, in June, spoke to GQ about the secret ceremony.
Speaking in the January edition of the male glossy he said: "We got away with it. We did it privately. And I've got a lot of people to thank for that.
"We did it for private reasons. Because we didn't want it f***ed up, because that would be sharing a secret. And the whole point is that it was a secret - a secret is a secret in my mind.
"Look I'm in love, I'm very happy. And that is as far as I'm prepared to go."
In the interview the actor hit out at stars who sell details of their private lives then complain about press intrusion.
Rachel also refuses to talk about intimate details of the wedding.
During an interview with The Daily Telegraph the actress said: "I'm sorry. I'm a newlywed. I'm still a blushing bride and it's really private. I can't tell you anything. Come back to me later."
The couple reportedly became close while filming Jim Sheridan’s Dream House. The pair play a married couple in the movie who move to a haunted house in the country.
