The rule means a parent's income is considered when evaluating student loans, even if the parent isn't providing any money for education. Getting married is one of the ways a student can be declared independent from parents.
"We're asking government to get rid of this requirement for a parental contribution,"opposition critic for Post-Secondary Education Training and Labour, Chris Collins told CBC news. "We're asking them to go back to the old way so the students in New Brunswick have the opportunity to attend post-secondary education and not have this barrier in place of accessing a loan."
Over 4,500 New Brunswick students loans have been affected by the rule change.
