Retailer Debenhams announced that items such as toasters, irons, shavers and bedding are proved to be the most popular gift choices, with a spike in sales seen over the last few weeks. This suggests that Romeos up and down the country were looking for alternative ways to declare their love.
Men have swapped traditional champagne, chocolates and flowers for household goods, such as kettles and toasters with sales up 22% vs. last year and bedding up by 20%. Women on the other hand have been opting for male grooming products such as shavers, with sales soaring by 87%.
Spokesperson for Debenhams Lizzie Singleton said: "The trend has been put down to cost-cutting measures and tightening of belts in the midst of a recession. Instead of the usual gifts and expensive meals out, customers are opting for useful re-usable, gifts.
"We just hope Shakespeare wouldn’t have been offended at the thought of Romeos everywhere presenting their Juliet’s with an iron on Valentine’s day.
"Whist we are pleased our customers are finding useful Valentines gifts for their other halves, we just hope they are romancing them in other ways and there aren’t a lot of disappointed lovers this year."
Valentine’s day can be a costly business with most gifts being disposable and only lasting one day. Once you have taken into consideration flowers, chocolates, dinner, drinks and taxis, the cost can be the only thing to send temperatures soaring on the day of love.
According to Debenhams, the top ten stores for sales of practical Valentines gifts were:
1) Manchester
2) Westfield
3) Brighton
4) Dublin
5) Cardiff
6) Glasgow
7) Bournemouth
8) Ipswich
9) Liverpool
10) Milton Keynes
This would suggest that in some cases, lovers in cities with a higher cost of living were more likely to shun romantic gifts in favour of the more practical options.
