John Gardiner, 67, who lists his address as 28 Pennan Road, Aberdeen, had been working as a cleaner while receiving £15,000 in benefits.
Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard how the OAP claimed he was unable to work because he was recovering from a bypass operation and was suffering angina pains. John then sent off cash to the Asian wife as she threatened to leave him if he stopped. It later emerged he was one of several men duped.
He admitted to wrongly claiming benefits between January 2004 and December 2007 and was sentenced to 190 hours of community service at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Procurator fiscal Sandy Hutchison said: "He was frank with the authorities. He blamed the money being sent to a lady in Thailand, one he may have married. He was trying to keep in with her by sending her money. Having said that, it was £15,000 that he wrongly obtained."
Defence lawyer Andrew Ormiston said: "Mr Gardiner has gone through a turbulent period with the loss of his daughter and separation from his wife. He met a woman in Thailand who he had emotions for and they unfortunately did marry."
