42% Of Irish Men Would Say 'Yes' If Their Girlfriend Proposed

A new leap year survey has revealed that 42% of men in Ireland would say ‘Yes’ if they were proposed to by their partners on February 29th – traditionally, the one day every four years where women can turn the tables and propose to their boyfriends.

The survey commissioned by PopCap Games revealed that Irish women are not as confident of a positive outcome were they to pop the question, with only 23% confident their partner would say yes unconditionally. 33% of men said they’d probably say no and 15% said they’d say yes but on the condition that their partner promised not to tell anyone how it’d happened. Interestingly 21% of women thought their guys would try to wriggle out of the situation by attempting to change the subject and almost 5% of the men said they’d throw up on the spot.

The survey also revealed that the idea of women proposing marriage to men is not as taboo as people might think. A staggering 19% of Irish respondents knew a girl who had proposed in the past and 1% said they were aware of a friends plan to do so this year. When PopCap put the same question to the UK audience a staggering 10% of respondents were aware of a friend’s plan to propose to their boyfriend this year.

Attitudes to traditional way of proposing

75% of Irish respondents were set in their ways that it should be the man that proposes with the remaining 25% saying that the tradition was either outdated or sexist. Once again our UK counterparts were more liberal with only 42% dead set on the tradition that men must propose.

Engagement ring or sex?

76% of Irish people surveyed believe the woman should give the man an engagement ring if she proposes compared to 49% of UK people, while the next most popular gift was Sex or a stiff drink with 12% and 10% respectively. Just under 11% of cash strapped Irishmen said they’d like their partner to propose so they wouldn’t have to buy her an engagement ring!

Don’t tell my mates

29% of men would be embarrassed to tell their friends that is was their girlfriend who proposed.
