Last Wedding Planned For Basford Register Office

A date has been set for the final wedding at Basford Register Office.

After Friday March 30 the Bulwell venue will become a centre for research into family history.

Thousands of couples have tied the knot there over the last six decades.

"The register office was built in 1953 and was made to measure for civil marriages," spokesman Rob Fisher told www.hucknalldispatch.co.uk. "But social changes now mean a much wider choice of places where people get married.

"Wedding ceremonies are held at all sorts of places which have appropriate licences, including hotels, sports centres and cricket grounds.

"Civil marriages are now performed at Nottingham Council House, while register offices are also operated in Carlton, West Bridgford and Mansfield.

"Whether people want a simple ceremony or something very elaborate, there is now a big choice."
