RSC Opens Its Doors To Weddings And Civil Partnerships

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is opening its doors for weddings and civil partnerships, offering couples the opportunity to take centre stage on their special day in the dramatic surroundings of the Company's home in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Fully licensed for marriage ceremonies and civil partnerships, couples can tie the knot while treading the boards in the impressive setting of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, which has a capacity of over 1,000 or the more intimate Swan Theatre which holds just over 400 people.

'Star-crossed lovers' can also take their vows 100 feet high and enjoy the views from the top of the iconic theatre Tower, which offers a breathtaking panorama of Shakespeare's town and the surrounding countryside. But for those looking for a special ceremony which is a little bit more down to earth there are eight other licensed spaces, ranging from rehearsal studios to reading rooms, located throughout the RSC's building.

The RSC's wedding and civil partnership service goes beyond simply providing a venue. The Company's team of highly skilled voice and movement artists can offer their expertise to couples preparing for their special 'performance' on the big day.

Weddings and civil partnership ceremonies form part of a wider range of events, activities and services now on offer at the RSC. The Company hires out its spaces for conferences, business meetings and awards ceremonies and has accommodated clients ranging from BMW and Jaguar Land Rover to a local school putting on a prize giving day for its pupils.

The RSC also provides locations for film and television crews. The team behind the BBC One medical drama Doctors recently shot new episodes of the series at the theatre.

The Company is branching into different aspects of live performance as well, expanding the scope of activities that audiences can experience. In addition to watching a play, visitors can enjoy music and comedy, view an exhibition, take a trip up the Tower, go on a backstage tour or dine in the Rooftop Restaurant and Bar.

RSC Head of Theatre Operations Liz Wainwright said: "There is something very romantic about the world of theatre and we like to think it has a unique atmosphere which makes any event feel special. Theatre is a place where magical things can happen and where dreams become reality so it is such an apt setting for a wedding or civil partnership.

"The RSC's home in Stratford-upon-Avon, revitalised by our transformation project which was completed in 2010, sits on the beautiful banks of the River Avon and integrates Victorian and Art Deco design within a contemporary, functional space which is attractive and accessible.

"As well as our two theatres, there are several rooms and spaces of various shapes and sizes available for hire, most notably the stunning Ashcroft Room in the eaves of the theatre, which accommodates between 40 and 250 people. We also have four distinctive theatre bars where visitors can relax with a drink and our Rooftop Restaurant and Bar serves up the best in British cooking.

'The RSC is a creative and inspiring space and there is a heart and soul to our building and our business which makes it a great venue for a special occasion."
