Scots Receive Golden Anniversary Message From Obama

A Scottish couple have received golden wedding congratulations from President Barack Obama and the First Lady.

Eddie, 70, and Jan Black, 68, who have lived in Cardenden, Fife, from birth, received the framed letter normally only given to American citizens while celebrating their 50th anniversary.

Their son Steven, who lives in Augusta, Georgia, managed to organise the message from the Obamas through his wife Leslie, who contacted the governor.

Jan told the Daily Record: "I had the shock of my life when we opened the gift to find the framed letter, I really was speechless.

"We were celebrating our anniversary with family and friends and it was given to us like any other present.

"The last thing I expected was a lovely, heartfelt message from the president."

Eddie commented to the paper: "Steven is a professor and has lived in the States for years and he phoned just before our anniversary to say that they couldn’t make it over for the celebrations.

"But they surprised us and turned up at the party with the message from the president and the first lady.

"It was a really great moment for me and Jan and topped off a wonderful night.

"I have no idea how he swung this because the letters are strictly for Americans only."
