The Cost Of Nesting Flies High

New parents spend a whopping £2,538 on preparing for their bundle of joy

A new host of celebrity copycats has bumped up spending on baby preparation by 13 per cent in just three years, according to Debenhams.

According to new research, couples now spend a whopping £2,538 on preparing for their bundle of joy compared to £2,246 in 2009.

State-of-the-art prams and cots, pricey nursery decorations, the latest toys and kids designer clothes are just some of the items expectant parents are shelling out for whilst they go through their ‘nesting’ phase.

Lizzie Singleton, spokesperson for Debenhams, said: "Our research shows that expecting a baby turns usually savvy shoppers into spend thrifts! Over 64 percent of customers we spoke to said that they spared no expense when it came to baby prep; with 39 percent admitting they were inspired by ‘A-list’ lifestyles.

"With increasing coverage of celeb mini-mes like Blue Ivy, whose parents Beyonce and Jay Z reportedly spent a fortune on her arrival, it’s no wonder the spending bar has lifted."

Debenhams’ study revealed that British newborns have wardrobes worth £600 and a toy collection of around £180. An average of £463 is spent on nursery decorations.

So big is the expense that 71 percent of first time parents rely on financial aid from their mums and dads and other relatives to get ready for their new arrival.

Lizzie continued: "We are encouraging shoppers to set a budget and stick to it. Our personal shopping service is a perfect way to do this without ‘knocking up’ the debt and is completely free."

Many first time parents admitted that their spending spiralled out of control in their first year as a parent, resulting in debt. Another factor to blame is a drop in household income as expectant mums go on maternity leave.

It was recently reported that Beyone and Jay Z shelled out a whopping $3,500 for a cot and $600,000 on a rocking horse. It has also been suggested that little Blue Ivy’s shoe collection is worth close to $20,000.

Beyonce isn’t the only celeb mum splashing the cash. Celebrity couples such as the Beckhams, Cruises and the Jolie-Pitts have shelled out close to $1,000,000 on their babies including designer wardrobes, lavish baby showers and expensive private birthing suites. Jennifer Lopez’s baby shower when pregnant with twins reportedly came to a whopping £900,000.

The spending doesn’t stop at the birth; recent research showed that parents also spend around £9,000 a year on raising a child. On average, parents also spend £1,000 more than originally budgeted during the first year of a baby’s life.

Women also shell out on average £478 on maternity clothes including nursing and maternity lingerie. This is another massive cost that many parents do not initially take into account.
