Being In Love A Top Cause Of Weight Gain

Being in love is one of the top reasons for weight gain, according to a new survey.

The poll by Slimavite found that along with having children, when asked to think back to when they first started putting on weight, one of the main reasons cited by slimmers is 'after I got married'.

The firm's nutritionist, Melanie Bibby, explained, this is a common reason for weight gain.

"Being in love is a wonderful feeling and finding that special person you want to spend the rest of your life with can leave you happy and contented," said Mel.

"What can often happen in that situation is that couples become comfortable and this contentedness can lead to overeating. Many couples may enjoy regularly going out for meals together, and their lifestyles may start to become more sedentary – with more time staying in and cuddling up on the sofa with wine and treats."

She added: "If you are in a relationship, think about the routines you have fallen into which may be leading to weight gain, and look at the ways you may be able to swap them for healthier ones."

Mel’s top tips

•Fun fitness - Try and plan fun days out together which are active, such as going walking in the countryside, along the coast or cycling. Or consider joining a local club, such as ballroom dancing.

•Cooking it up – Spend time together cooking healthy meals. As an alternative to a meal out, why not take turns to create a special healthy meal for each other.

•Building a home – DIY, cleaning and gardening are all great ways to get some extra exercise without even realising it.

•Healthy swaps – If Friday night is your night for cuddling up together with a good film then experiment with healthier snacks options to replace the biscuit tin or crisps and sweets aisle.

•Get active – Get into a routine of exercising together, such as going for a run or cycle together on a set morning each week. You are much more likely to keep up with the routine if you push each other to continue with it. Many gyms also offer joint memberships.

•Support – It may seem obvious but supporting each other is really important. Make an agreement with each other that you want to be healthy.
