'Football Widows' Turn To Film

Whilst Euro 2012 currently dominates the viewing calendar for football fans, it seems those less interested in the beautiful game are turning to film for entertainment.

Figures released by LOVEFiLM reveal a 39 per cent increase in viewings of romantic comedies via its streaming service during the first week of the European Championship, suggesting football widows are swapping sport for sweethearts.

Valentine’s Day, whose star studded cast including Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper and Ashton Kutcher could rival the earning potential of some of Europe’s star strikers, tops the rom-com league table, followed by a selection of chick flick favourites including Leap Year, It’s Complicated and Did You Hear About The Morgans?

5. Larry Crowne

6. Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride

Helen Cowley, Editor of the service, commented: "Football widows are often relegated to the sidelines when it comes to finding different viewing options during sporting seasons like Euro 2012. However, the rise in popularity of the rom-com titles available on our instant streaming service suggests that women are tackling the football frenzy and scoring themselves some light relief in the form of a good chick flick."
