Car Park Plaque Marks Newlyweds' Meeting Point

There are many wedding gifts you can choose for your other half some nice jewellery, boudoir snaps, personalised luggage or put a plaque in a car park?

According to journallive.co.uk that's exactly how Karen Crosby surprised her other half.

The newlywed unveiled the plaque to husband Steve on level three of Prince Bishops Shopping Centre car park in Durham, which marks the spot where they meet in January 2011.

Steve, 47, an arts lecturer at Gateshead College and Karen, 50, a yoga instructor, started chatting online in December 2010. They set up a blind date at a coffee shop in Durham city centre the next month.

Each got confused about the meeting point and ended up getting lost in the Prince Bishops Shopping Centre, finally stopping in the service yard. They soon discovered they parked in the wrong place and found out they were each others date.

The plaque reads: 'Here is the place where Karen found her beloved Steve, her soul mate and the love of her life, on Sunday 9 January 2011'.

Steve asked Karen to marry him just six days after meeting and they said their 'I do's' at Wynyard Hall on June 27.

Karen told the paper: "I’ve been planning the unveiling of the plaque for some months now so I can’t believe the day has finally arrived.

"I was so nervous he would come in on level three and see it before it was actually revealed, but it was all worth it to see his face – he looked genuinely surprised.

"I’d like to thank everybody at Prince Bishops Shopping Centre for putting the plaque together and for understanding how much it means to both of us."

Steve commented: "The plaque is amazing. I’m completely overwhelmed – it has been such a lovely surprise. People always comment on the circumstances around the way Karen and I met, so it does seem fitting to honour the car park in such a way."
