Sham Bride Pleads Guilty To Bigamy

A would-be-bride in a sham marriage has pleaded guilty to charges of assisting illegal immigration and bigamy.

Ayesha Mullan, 26, who is a British citizen living in Leicester appeared before Downpatrick crown court on Monday 19 November 2012 charged with assisting unlawful immigration, two counts of bigamy related to multiple marriages and perjury.

She was released on bail to re-appear at the same court for sentencing on 8 January 2013.

The charges arose out of an operation by UK Border Agency officers who acting on intelligence prevented the sham wedding between Mullan and an Indian man from taking place at Down District council offices on 11 October 2011.

The would-be-groom Salauddin Daudbhai Bhadki 38 was convicted and sentenced to 15 months in jail at Newtownards crown court on 29 June 2012.

A sham marriage typically occurs when a non-European national marries someone from the European Economic Area, or the UK, as a means of attempting to gain long-term residency and the right to work and claim benefits in this country.

Earl Aiken, for the UK Border Agency said: "This woman thought she could abuse the immigration rules and evade justice by taking part in a sham marriage at a location where she was not known.

"As this case shows, Northern Ireland is not a soft touch for this type of crime and we will track down, detain and prosecute those fraudsters who assist others with no right to be in the UK."
