The former Sony record executive's tell-all book responds to Mariah's criticism that he was controlling and reveals how this behaviour turned her into the diva she is today.
He first husband Tommy Mottola writes: "If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize. Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success."
The pair married when she was 23 while Tommy was 20 years with two children from his first marriage.
Tommy defends his pushiness and the fact he did not give Mariah time-off at the beginning of her fame.
He said: "My feeling was that there'd be plenty of time for Mariah to celebrate just a little ways down the road. I’m not talking 10 years, just a few."
The memoir will be released on January 15.
