Glen Williams (28) is alleged to have borne a grudge against his father, Richard Williams, since childhood, Chelmsford Crown Court heard. He had not spoken to his father in over two years before the attack on August 5 last year.
The court heard on August 5, both father and son appeared to be chatting amicably earlier in the evening. As the pair left the event in Park Avenue around 1am, Williams launched himself at his father, causing him to hit his head against a lamppost.
The court was told the "tremendous force" of the blow knocked Mr Williams unconscious, fracturing his skull and breaking two bones in his neck.
Mr Williams later reported he had been left permanently deaf in his right ear. He also said he had lost his sense of smell and taste.
In mitigation, the court was told that Williams felt abandoned by his father after Mr Williams left his wife and children.
Defence counsel, Craig Tipper, said: "His father left home and that's the thrust of the defendant's animosity towards his father."
He added that Williams said the attack had been the result of a build-up of "years of anger and upset" towards his father.
However Judge Anthony Goldstaud said Mr Williams actions did not warrant a "revenge attack".
Williams pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and was jailed for 12 months.
