A source close to the couple said Cyrus and Hemsworth were not yet ready to end their relationship.
They explained: "[They] have been a bit rocky, but are not giving up. They both want it to work."
Rumours about the couple's relationship intensified recently after singer Cyrus was spotted without her engagement ring. Shortly before this, it was claimed Hemsworth had kissed actress January Jones at an Oscar party.
Cyrus then hit out at claims, stating on social networking site Twitter that she had not called off her wedding. Her fiancé has recently been spotted back home in his native Australia and he is believed to be contemplating the couple's future.
Speaking of Hemsworth, a source said: "He doesn't seem especially sad [or] happy. He seems to be enjoying seeing his family as far as we can tell."
Cyrus is still in LA as she is recording her newest album.
The couple have dated on-and-off since they met on the set of movie The Last Song in June 2009. In June last year, Cyrus confirmed they were engaged.
