The survey, which was commissioned by Sky Living HD in the run up to a new series of Sing Date which airs next week, saw the track face competition from songs by The Righteous Brothers, Eric Clapton and Etta James.
The Righteous Brother's 'Unchained Melody' came second in the poll, while Bryan Adams (Everything I Do), I Do It For You came third. Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton was fourth with Robbie Williams' Angels claimed fifth place.
Interestingly, only one song released in the past 15 years made it into the top ten, in the form of Adele's Someone Like You.
The study of 2,000 adults found more traditional long songs features in the top 50, while the likes of One Direction, Ed Sheeran and Rihanna failed to make the cut.
Other songs on the list included Nat King Cole's Unforgettable, Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful World and Aerosmith's I Don't Want To Miss A Thing.
Of those surveyed, seven out of ten said they felt modern artists struggled to produce romantic songs like those by Whitney Houston and Barry White. And despite the following boy bands such as One Direction command, only 28% of people said they liked their love songs.
Lastly, one in five of said they would feel confident enough to serenade a partner with a ‘special song’, but just under half of those surveyed said they would actually like their partner to serenade them. The most popular 'serenade' songs were Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart and Lionel Richie's Hello.
