The double Olympic gold medallist and her fiancé took to social networking site Twitter to share their good news, according to Sky News.
Adlington, 24, who recently announced her retirement from competitive swimming, tweeted: "Had the best weekend ever!!! Thank you @Harryneeds for making me the happiest person ever right now #engaged #isaidyes."
She then sent a second tweet to say she had celebrated the news with friends.
She wrote: "Had an amazing day with some amazing people! #happy #lucky."
Her husband-to-be also took to Twitter. He said: "Popped the big question to the wifey @BeckAdlington & we're now #engaged #shesaidyes happiest man on earth."
He then added: "If you like then you should put a ring on it."
The pair announced they were dating in summer of 2011.
Needs is reported to be training for the 2016 Olympics, while Adlington hopes to coach young swimmers following her retirement in February.
In an interview last year, the swimmer said marriage was a long way off for the couple.
At the time, she explained: "He's only 20, bless him. If I ever mentioned marriage to him he'd be like, 'I'm only a baby'."
