According to research by Halls mentol sweets, the 'dating disasters' ranged from forgetting a date's name, to falling over.
Of the 2,150 people surveyed, 31% admitted to being crippled by nerves before a first date, leading them to make an embarrassing mistake and jeopardise their chances of a second date.
Around 8% of men committed the mistake of getting their date's name wrong because they were nervous, while another 2% admitted to being so nervous, they fell over.
A third of women polled confessed looking 'flushed' or sweaty on a date was a concern for them, while 16% admitted to being lost for words on a date, creating an awkward atmosphere. This was similar for men, with 14% admitting to the same situation.
To help cope with first-date nerves, 33% of men revealed they have a few drinks for 'Dutch courage' while 44% of women choose an outfit to give them confidence.
Others said going to the gym first, or eating a good meal helped to settle nerves.
Many of respondents admitted to checking out their potential partner on social networking sites like Facebook prior to their date, with 22% of men and 19% of women admitting to online snooping.
The survey also found that when it comes to securing a first date, more than half (54%) met through friends.
The workplace, bars and clubs were also popular places to meet, while only 12% claimed of those surveyed said they had met online via a dating website.
Following the results, Susan Quilliam, Halls XS relationship expert said: "It’s a universal truth that dating is nerve-wracking, especially the last 10 seconds before that first encounter, or "Date Minus 10" as we call it. It’s at this moment you need to take a deep breath and pull yourself together physically, mentally - and emotionally."
