The 28-year-old actress took to her Twitter account after rumours regarding the couple's relationship status emerged at the weekend, Now magazine has reported.
Atkinson said the couple became engaged last year, but only decided to share the news recently.
She wrote: "Ok, to those asking, YES! I am Engaged. I have been since Aug. We celebrated privately last Yr with Fam & friends :)".
She also posted a photo of her engagement ring, and said: "Thanks for all the lovely messages.Your all too kind :) enjoy the rest of the day. I'm having a lazy one. Food, films, dog, duvet #perfect".
The actress had a high-profile relationship with footballer Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007 and was previously engaged to footballer Marcus Bent. She has been dating Richards since 2009.
In 2008, Richards appeared on Britain's Got Talent as one half of martial arts duo, Strike.
