Having A Baby 'Helps Women's Social Life'

New research has found having a baby can increase a woman's circle of friends.

The survey, which was commissioned by Natures Purest, discovered that women make an average of nine new friends following the birth of their baby.

The survey revealed that while childless women have an average of 13 friends, the number jumps to 22 in the year after their child is born.

In addition, of the 2,000 women surveyed, 53% admitted it was easier to bond with other women and make friends once they became a mother.

Of those women, 70% said it was because they had so much "in common".

The results also found 16% of mothers had a better social life after having children as they had a lot more free time to meet up with people.

Part of this increase in friendships, was related to increased interaction with other mothers, with almost half of new mums making friends with other women at a mother and toddler group.

22% said they struck up friendships in antenatal classes and a further fifth met people through other friends.

When it came to conversation between new mums, sharing the experience of birth was the most popular topic of conversation, with 73% admitting they would happily share their stories of labour with their new friends; while four in 10 said they felt more comfortable sharing intimate and personal information with mums who they had only recently met.

A spokeswoman for Natures Purest said: "There is a misconception in society that starting a family will mean you are stuck indoors but it’s simply not true.

"Our research shows the opposite – becoming a mum can do wonders for your social life as there are so many groups and activities to become involved with. Having a baby is a life-changing experience, especially if you are a first time mum, so it’s important to have friends in a similar position.

"Many women whose friendships evolved when their children were young go on to keep the same group of friends throughout their life and as a consequence the youngsters form strong bonds too."
