The survey found mothers with three children were actually the most stressed – with those with four children found to be more relaxed.
The study found that while transitioning from two to three children can be overwhelming for parents because it means they will now be outnumbered, mothers tend to 'let go' once they reach four children.
Doctor Janet Taylor, a New York-based psychiatrist, has four children and see explained why four kids are easier to deal with than three.
"There's just not enough space in your head" once you have at least four children, according to the doctor. She also said: "The more children you have, the more confident you become in your parenting abilities. You have to let go."
Obsessively making the house baby-proof, for example, was also found to become less of a priority after the third child.
Jill Smokler, who is a blogger and the author of Motherhood Comes Naturally (And Other Vicious Lies), also has three children and agreed with the latest findings.
"Going from one to two was an easy, breezy transition. Two to three, everything was turned upside-down," she admitted. Ms Smokler added that the reason for the difficulty in transition was because "You only have two hands!", noting that not having enough hands to hold onto each of them while crossing the street was a cause of extreme stress.
Of the mothers that took part in the survey, each was asked to rate their stress level on a scale of one to ten, with the average number coming out as 8.5.
It also found that a lot of the stress mothers experienced is self-induced, with 75% worrying more about the pressure they put on themselves than the pressure felt from others.
