Judge's Hopes For More 'No Frills' Ceremonies

A judge has said he hopes more couples will be encouraged to marry in a 'no frills' ceremony after Keira Knightly tied the knot with her fiancé in a small ceremony at the weekend.

Speaking to The Times, Sir Paul Coleridge added that he hoped other young couples could now marry without having to worry about spending thousands on lavish events.

Sir Coleridge, who is an expert in family law, launched his charity the Marriage Foundation a year ago to help promote the benefits of long term relationships and encourage people to try and keep families together.

He felt the costs of weddings in Britain had soared recently with the average price reaching £20k. He also supported tax breaks for married couples, but said they must be 'substantial to have an impact on family life'.

He admitted: "If people thought they could not get married unless they had a glittering celebrity-style wedding, I think that’s very tragic."

Last weekend, Miss Knightley married Klaxons band member James Righton at an intimate ceremony in France. She wore a Chanel dress she had worn previously, and only a handful of guests attended the wedding.

The couple confirmed their engagement last May after dating for more than a year.
