Plans to legalise same-sex marriage is set to be approved by MPs later after surviving a Tory attempt to block the move.
An amendment, which supporters warned could derail the legislation altogether, was defeated after the Government reached a plan with Labour.
56 Conservative members supported the move to extend civil partnerships to heterosexual couples, just half the number predicted, while eight Labour MPs, three Lib Dems and three SDLP members joined the Tory critics.
However, the proposals were defeated in a free vote by a large majority of 370.
The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill is now expected to clear its final stages in the Commons today, although it is believed to still face stiff resistance in the House of Lords.
Former Tory minister Tim Loughton accused ministers of making a "grubby deal" with Labour to see off his amendment, before adding that the battle over changing the current legislation would continue.
Despite the plans receiving support, Prime Minister David Cameron is still under heavy criticism from those within his own party who disagree with the measures. They believe it will cost the party a lot of support.
A series of other amendments tabled by Tory opponents of the reforms were also defeated during Monday's debate. They included one which would have given registrars who objected to same-sex unions the right to refuse to conduct marriages.
